If you need an auto loan, get a bad credit auto loan or sub-prime auto loan. You will pay a higher interest rate due to your bad credit but if you pay on time you will be re-building your credit. It takes time to raise your score just stay on track with your payments. Good luck.

Get a secured credit card and use that to rebuild a history of on-time payments.
Many firms love to give new unsecured credit cards to people just out of Chapter 7 because they know that they cannot file again for 8 more years….don’t fall into that trap. Only use secured credit cards.

That’s going to depend on what caused your credit to get messed up in the first place. There are three major things that are going to help:

1) Proper action
2) Time
3) Verification and investigation

If over spending is your issue, then you’ve got to cut your spending down. Don’t use your credit cards. Cut them up or freeze them in glass of water if you have to. Anything so that you don’t use them. Pay your balance over time. Always make at least the minimum payments, but take any extra money that you have and make larger payments to either 1) the card with the lowest balance (snowballing) or 2) the card with the highest interest rate.

If you’ve had a bankruptcy or a foreclosure, then it will take time to clean up your credit record. The attorney that helped with your bankruptcy should be able to shed some insight onto how long it stays on record.

If you’ve just been delinquent on payments or have had poor payment histories reported to the credit bureau, then do everything you can to not make late payments and always pay at least the minimum.

If you’re doing the right things, then your score will improve over time.

Also, get your credit report and make sure that there is not incorrect information listed on your account. You can get a free copy of your credit report from each bureau, once per year, at annualcreditreport.com.

Be wary of companies that offer to consolidate your debt – it hurts your credit to sign up for them and if they miss payments, you’ll be liable and will get another ding on your credit. If you’re having trouble meeting your bill obligations, then call each credit card company and ask them if they can lower your rate. It’s worth a shot.

For your project, go to the websites of the credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) and see what they say.
Also, check out the website of your State’s Attorney General or Consumer Protection office; there is a wealth of good information there also.

We’re wanting to buy a house in a year. We just applied for a FHA loan and were denied b/c my hubby doesn’t have any built credit (after declaring bankruptcy in 2004) and my credit is horrible after going delinquent on multiple credit cards over a year ago when we made a big move (600 mile move/no jobs = no money to pay credit cards).

I agree that you pretty much have to reestablish your credit.
There are non-profit credit counselors that can negotiate for you lower payments. Their fee is usually minimal like $20 a month or so.

If you can reestablish your credit by being consistent and keeping a low to next to nothing balance.

Also, this is a lot harder than it sounds, live below your means. Just because one makes 50k a year or whatever, doesn’t necessarily mean you spend 50k a year. A lot of people have a hard time with this.
